Smit, the cultural center of the Khasi Hills, is situated 11 km away from the capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong on the Shillong Jowai Road.

Smit is the traditional seat of power of the Hima Khyrim (Kingdom of Khyrim) a sub-tribe of the Khasis. The Nongkrem dance is performed in Smit between October and November. Smit has an old traditional house, the iing shad, believed to be more than 100 years old.
